Tory Burch Collection Notes: Pre Fall 2020
“I am always referencing quotes, and this one has been pinned up on our design boards for a while. We are constantly inspired by women who defy their times and circumstances, and challenge the word no. Pre-Fall 2020 looks to the adventurous spirit of Amelia Earhart, who broke glass ceilings with every flight. The collection mixes bandana prints and tropical florals that evoke destinations, while a mix of tomboy shapes tap into my early design roots.”
Silhouettes: Simple shapes capture the elegant, pared-back spirit of the season. Classic sportswear—relaxed blazers, preppy cardigans—is approached from a nostalgic perspective, with shades of Thirties silhouetting. Restrained volumes — breezy shirt dressing, east tomboy trousers and tunics, reworked in a new blouson shape — exude a cool nonchalance while streamlined jumpsuits nod to aviation-wear.
Palette: A range of neutrals — ecru set against pristine white; bone paired with khaki and navy mixed with black — adds subtle depth to the collection. Vivid shades such as Kelly green, ochre and aubergine play against the tonal shades.
Prints & Patterns: A bandana paisley, seen in a number of scales and finishes, taps into the idea of classic Americana (and is a subtle nod to early aviatrix’s penchant for scarves). Meanwhile, bold tropical florals recall idyllic locations like Hawaii, Polynesia and the like, supporting the Tory’s ongoing love of Destination Anywhere and travel.
Fabrications: Lightweight cottons — crisp poplin, airy voile, stretch jersey and crepe — are unfussy and travel-minded. Sturdy denim and hand woven raffia knits add balance.
Accessories: Accessories distill the casual refinement of the season. A new Lee Radziwill Bag shape is an exploration of form, with a pliable accordion shape that expands and collapses easily, while a roomy hobo in soft leather has an easy vibe. Scarf-tied aviators and comfort flats — suede moccasin and embossed leather loafers — round out the collection.
