Kate Spade New York Summer 2019 Collection
In her second collection for Kate Spade New York, launching in Summer 2019, Creative Director Nicola Glass continues to focus on the new house codes she introduced for spring – always keeping the core DNA in mind, while staying true to the brand’s promise: Optimistic Femininity.
Nicola has refined design techniques and details, leading the collection to feel sophisticated and current. Delicate styles sit alongside bold pieces, designed to complement one another. Innovative fabrications, thoughtful finishes, and fluid silhouettes elevate each category. And the brand’s iconic mark—the spade—continues to be used as a novel design element throughout the collection, integrated both overtly and subtly into patterns, cutouts and functional hardware.
This season ushers in a fresh and eclectic approach to color across all categories, with new takes on color-blocking and unexpected color combinations. Unique, graphic prints continue to be a defining signature of the collection.
Elements that appear later in the season – such as summer suede and deep berry-tone colors – allow for an easy transition into the fall collection, depending how they are accessorized.
Summer is a cohesive collection designed to offer a complete seasonal wardrobe. Styling is centered around mixing pieces and layering – the idea of “more is more,” while staying true to harmony and balance.
Ready-To-Wear
Ready-to-wear features fluid and feminine silhouettes that are flattering and easy to wear. Thoughtful details like ruching, shearing, and puffed sleeves imbue the clothes with a sense of polished ease. Midi dresses in striking solid hues are as sophisticatedly bold as patterned designs, and an expanded range of separates, including lightweight knitwear, round out the line.
Bi-color and patchwork-patterned color-blocking in unexpected color combinations— warm caramel and orange, nearly nude and chartreuse, desert palm, and bright peony—create a sophisticated visual effect, as do gingham jacquards and abstracted sun umbrella prints are also echoed in the handbag category.
Handbags
Handbags and small leather goods (SLGs) continue to reflect the house codes developed in spring. Prints, fabrics, details, and color—including neutrals, brights, deep berry hues, optic whites, and fresh takes on color-blocking—complement other product categories across all deliveries.
Spades and spade-inspired hardware are prominent design elements throughout the collection, with new details like half-circle grommets.
Season-specific raw materials are widely used in both core and fashion handbags: canvas, clear plastic, denim and jacquard raffia crafted into totes, pouches, makeup travel cases, bucket bags, and canteen bags.
Distinctive novel moments include a lustrous sequin parrot embroidery on an easy nylon tote, a parrot-shaped bag crafted from molded leather, jacquard raffia overlaid with a floral print and striped straw Sam bags edged in tall fringe.
Jewelry
In a color palette that echoes handbags and ready-to-wear, the jewelry collection is designed for individual expression. Whether a single piece is worn alone or different groups are layered and stacked together, delicate is juxtaposed against bold, and it all mixes beautifully.
The spade (and abstractions of it) is a key design element in core collections: enamel bangles with a faceted spade, leather cuffs with a spade twistlock, spade flowers crafted from mother-of-pearl, and filigree details inspired by its graceful silhouette.
There are leather wrap bracelets cut from the luxe leathers used in the handbags, and oversized Lucite earrings inspired by the Lucite heels in footwear. A parrot cocktail ring, a standout favorite, was created using artisanal, time-tested techniques.
And we have introduced a limited number of collectible pieces, each engraved with the season on the underside.
Footwear
Summer footwear is designed to ground the diaphanous, fluid silhouettes in ready-to-wear: there are cut-out wedges with crisscross details; low, block-heel sandals with elegant ankle straps; chunky t-strap platforms with flared heels and menswear-inspired slingback flats. Made from refined leathers and suedes in marigold, brick and cinnamon spice, they are go-anywhere warm weather essentials.
Tech
Color and embellishment as seen in handbags and ready-to-wear trickle down to the smallest everyday devices, including spademals, the brand’s signature group of character animals.
