The Cat's Out Of The Bag At Tory Burch Pop-Up In Landmark Hong Kong

Unique concept features the work of German photographer Walter Schels.

Tory Burch has unveiled a unique pop-up at LANDMARK Hong Kong, the luxury shopping destination located in Central Hong Kong.  The concept shop features the work of German photographer Walter Schels, whose animal portraits appeared in Tory’s Resort 2024 collection and now in a limited-edition capsule collection available at the pop-up store. The brand celebrated the opening with a special event on August 26th. Guests included Yuqi Song from K-pop girl group (G)I-DLE, famous Thai actor Hirunkit Changkham (Nani), Day from Hong Kong girl group Collar, Hong Kong singer Kayan9896, Moon Tang and more.

From today and continuing through January 31, 2025, a large-scale image of Schels’s portrait of a cat, mid-meow, repeats along the interior walls of the pop-up, located on the second floor of the LANDMARK Atrium. The images create a dramatic backdrop for a curated assortment of pieces from the capsule with ready-to-wear, footwear, and accessories featuring the same Schels’s cat photo print. Bringing a touch of Los Angeles, Shanghai, Paris, and Tokyo to Hong Kong, the pop-up nods to similar concept stores the brand has recently opened in these iconic fashion cities.  Tory created the original concept in collaboration with Humberto Leon; the co-founder of Opening Ceremony and former co-Creative Director of Kenzo, Leon began his career in visual merchandising. 

The recurring cat image on the walls and fitting-room curtains at the pop-up juxtaposes a shag carpet covering the floors, ledges, ottomans, and display tables, designed to mimic a cat tower. Humberto also commissioned artist Aranza Garcia of Chuch Estudio in Merida, Mexico to create a series of pink ceramic pedestals which are positioned in two clusters of six. Items from the capsule as well as the Tory Burch Fall collection are displayed on the pedestals or nestled into the shag-covered ledge and on hanging shelves. 

Tory discovered Schels’s work years ago and was immediately drawn to his animal portraits. “There’s a human element to Walter’s photographs, in the way he looks at the animals and they in turn look back,” she says. “He gives animals the same respect as humans, highlighting their unique personalities and emotions.”

Schels is known for his tender, yet penetrating portraits of artists, celebrities, and politicians, and has captured young people in the process of transitioning. He began photographing animals when he was a young boy. “Animals were my friends as a child; I felt close to them,” Walter says. “Animals don’t disguise themselves. An animal doesn’t ask itself, ‘Am I beautiful?’ It has no sense of shame. It is just the way it is.”

“The pictures are so arresting. They stop you in your tracks, and you question them,” adds Humberto. “I know Tory is a lover of the arts, so I wanted to incorporate that. I wanted it to feel like walking into an exhibition. There are few elements, but they are all strong.”
