Gucci Launches A New Sneaker: The Gucci Tennis 1977
The Gucci Tennis 1977 sneaker is designed by Creative Director Alessandro Michele studying the House’s archive piece under a new lens, carefully unifying original details with a modern spirit.
Recalling an original retro tennis sneaker from the archives, the Gucci Tennis 1977 low-top is crafted in diverse canvas combinations and prints with a white rubber sole outlined with a green line, another line defining the sole. When the sneaker launched over forty years ago, the wearer was likely a jet setting tennis player, on courts from Florida to the French Riviera; while the sneaker wearer today is expected to cross city streets from Hangzhou to Hanoi.
The Gucci Tennis 1977 comes in canvas in basic colors and also in a variety of different, distinctive prints. This eclectic style for men and women combines a variety of elements from the House’s heritage with a Gucci Tennis 1977 label that sits on the insole and the tongue: a textured GG motif on the bumper and outsole, and the House Web stripe in either green-red-green or blue-red-blue on the sides. All models display the House Web stripe on their sides and the GG motif on their bumpers and outsoles.
Inspired by the design thinking behind the Gucci Tennis 1977 sneaker, where an original low-top tennis shoe from the House archive served as the reference point for a contemporary version, the #AccidentalInfluencer project presents imagery in which seemingly identical people congregate spontaneously in everyday situations.
Wearing similar outfits and the Gucci Tennis 1977 sneaker, these groups of almost clones are pictured as if by an amateur capturing candid moments on the street, on a bus, or at a café or fruit and vegetable store. The effect is hypnotic and haunting, suggesting improbable coincidences. Presenting diverse groups of different ages, Siedentopf wryly creates situations of apparent happenstance where a group of long-haired men with beards pass each other on the pavement, or elderly ladies in matching coats take tea together.
The Gucci Tennis 1977 is a perfect summer shoe, with widespread appeal on account of its distinctive House motifs, vintage styling and sporty look.
