Global hunger is on the rise with one in nine people having to go to bed on an empty stomach every night. This interactive conversation featuring Michael Kors, Lupita Nyong’o and the World Food Programme’s (WFP) Antonella D’Aprile focused on the vital role school meals play in the fight against hunger. The discussion was moderated by author and artist Cleo Wade last October 21, 2019 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

“There is that adage, charity begins at home, and I was raised with that philosophy. I was also raised to consider philanthropy my human responsibility. It sets the example for everyone else – you can show up, you can help, you can start from where you’re at.”

-Lupita Nyong’o, Academy Award-winning actor

“As someone said, ‘No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.’ And we have to do it. It’s time for action. Go back to your communities and talk about the campaign, talk about what Lupita said on social media recently: there are things that are wrong, but we can fix them.”

-Antonella D’Aprile, WFP’s Country Director in Nicaragua

“This is a solvable problem. There is enough food. We have to make noise, we have to let people know they can get involved and make a difference. The reality is that education and nutrition, hand in hand, is an incredible win-win.”
